Singapore cruises

Singapore - the very name summons visions of the mysterious East. The commercial center of Southeast Asia, this island city-state of four million people is a metropolis of modern high-rise buildings, Chinese shop-houses with red-tiled roofs, sturdy Victorian buildings, Buddhist temples and Arab bazaars. Founded in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles of the fabled East India Company, the city is a melting pot of people and cultures. Malay, Chinese, English and Tamil are official languages. Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Hinduism and Christianity are the major faiths. Singapore is an ever-fascinating island boasting colorful traditions, luxurious hotels and some of the finest duty-free shopping in the world.
Lying just 85 miles north of the Equator at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, the island was a haven for Malay pirates and Chinese and Arab traders.

TOUR OVERVIEW

Departing your ship, you'll board your motorcoach for a scenic ride through the streets of Singapore on your way to one of the highest points in town, Mt. Faber. Here, you'll be able to capture the magnificent panoramic views of the harbor, Sentosa Island and the downtown district.
Re-board your motorcoach to explore some of the country's more natural wonders at the Botanical Gardens. The Gardens epitomize the tropical island's luxuriant parks. Spread over 30 acres, it offers a combination of untouched primary forest and specialty gardens, including the National Orchid Garden, the world's largest collection of orchids displayed in their full splendor. It houses over 1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids of orchids. See the "dignitaries" such as Margaret Thatcher, Nelson Mandela, Laura Bush and Princess Diana in the VIP (Very Important Plants) Garden.
Board your air-conditioned motorcoach and travel along Orchard Road through the heart of Singapore's shopping and hotel district. Your route, passes the Istana (Presidential Palace), the world-famous Raffles Hotel, Parliament House and Shenton Way - the "Wall Street of Southeast Asia" and into Chinatown. Here you'll find the old streets with shops and temples surrounded by towering modern skyscrapers.
Once you arrive, follow your guide to your first stop at the Sri Mariamann Temple. This stunning Hindu temple is the oldest, and perhaps the most active, in the city. Originally built in 1827, it's dedicated to the goddess Sri Mariamman, known to help heal people from disease.
You'll get to spend some time exploring the maze of awning-draped shops and market stalls before reboarding your motorcoach and to continue your adventure.
Next enjoy a sumptous lunch at a local Chinese restaurant, served family style.
Once your lunch is over, you'll make your final stop, Jurong Bird Park. Set in 50 acres of landscaped grounds, the park boasts over 9,000 birds from 600 different species. You'll have plenty of time to explore. The park features a nocturnal birdhouse, the world's largest walk-in open-air aviary, the tallest man-made waterfall, a penguin exhibit and more. Be sure to see the Flamingo Lake and the Pelican Cove, and take in one of the many bird shows that abound.
Your day of adventure comes to an end, as you return to your motorcoach for the scenic ride back to your ship.
